280 Walkers: Canadian Diabetes Association Manitoba & Nunavut

Christina Summers’ brother Chris, has lived with type 1 diabetes for 24 years.¬† Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease. What happens is that your body does not make insulin, which is a hormone that enables the body to break down and use sugar for energy. There is no cure. Chris needs insulin every day to stay alive.

Christina volunteered her time and talent to photograph the Lace Up with Team Diabetes event this spring. Nearly 300 walkers raised funds for diabetes research and programs.

Christina also photographed the CDA Expo this fall. The event was free to help people learn about diabetes self-management while connecting and motivating others living with diabetes. Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod from BodyBreak were guest speakers.

My brother has lived with diabetes almost half his life. I know the physical, emotional, and financial impact. Both events were wonderful days full of hope and sheer determination. Knowledge is the power you need to make informed decisions about how to lead a healthy lifestyle and stay active.
